Why isn’t every day Small Business Day?

To the Editor:

Saturday, Nov. 28, was designated Small Business Saturday in an effort to encourage people to shop small to support our local businesses.

This begs the question: Why isn’t every day Small Business Day? Why is it relegated to only one day of the year?

People who know me are aware that I have never, nor will I ever, order anything online. Part of the reason is that I don’t want to share personal information that way, but the main reason is that I care too much about our community. In fact, I shop almost exclusively right here in Guilderland.

I hear from many people that they get great prices online; it’s quick and easy; and packages appear right outside their door.  Our local businesses, though, offer something that online businesses can’t: the ability to see and feel the merchandise, an opportunity to get to know the owners and staff, and the chance to have conversations with friends and neighbors who are also shopping.

Most of all, when you shop local you are helping people make a living. And what’s more important than that?

Amazon won’t fold if you stop buying from them, but our wonderful small businesses will. Please think about this the next time you log onto your computer. Thank you.
