Guilderland district announces 29th COVID-19 case

GUILDERLAND — On Thursday evening, another COVID-19 case was announced by the superintendent of Guilderland schools, Marie Wiles, in an email to district families.

“Today we learned that a districtwide employee has tested positive for COVID-19,” Wiles wrote. “This case does not present a risk of exposure to individuals in the school community, and no one from our schools needs to quarantine as a result.”

This makes the 29th case of COVID-19 for the district so far this school year.

Six of the district’s seven schools are currently offering in-person classes.

Kindergartners through fourth-graders at Guilderland Elementary School moved to remote learning on Monday after the school’s first COVID-19 case — identified by the state as an off-site teacher — was announced on Saturday.

That case, because of quarantine requirements, caused a staffing shortage at the school, Wiles wrote earlier. In-person classes are to resume at Guilderland Elementary on Wednesday, Dec. 9.

Guilderland High School resumed its regular schedule on Monday after in-person classes had been suspended from Nov. 19 through Thanksgiving break, again due to a staffing shortage caused by quarantine requirements.

So far, 17 COVID-19 cases are associated with the high school, the majority of the district’s cases.
