We have an important job as American citizens

To the Editor:

During this week of Gratitude Celebration, I want to thank the journalists of The Altamont Enterprise for the front-page story highlighting that a small community school board member was exposed to a cyber-bullying incident because of the different views about election results [“Right-wing social media account mocks Voorheesville School Board member’s post, creating controversy, The Altamont Enterprise, Nov. 14, 2024].

Whether I personally believe or think one way or another, or agree with the rhetoric used on either side, this story helped me to remember how wonderful it is to be a citizen of the United States of America.

Strong language and focused attention on each other is inevitable as we do our very best with what we have known and what we believe. I personally experience that each of us is doing our best and that is all we can ask of each other.

It reminded me how grateful I am to live here in this community with all of you. I think we have an important job as American citizens: to live what we espouse; to stand up for each other whatever our political, religious or cultural views; and to tolerate our wonderful differences. We are America and we are blessed.

Thank you, Altamont Enterprise, for sharing this story and this letter.
