Through A.I., ‘see’ a ghost church

To the Editor:

It's a ghost church: The St. James Lutheran Evangelical Church.

There are no known photographs of this church that once stood on the hill above Altamont at the current entrance to the Fairview Cemetery.

Despite a 1991 appeal from the Guilderland Historical Society and then-Town Historian Roger Keenholts, no picture has ever turned up of this lost church.

On Thursday, Nov. 21, at the Guilderland Public Library, Tom Capuano, former Guilderland Historical Society vice president, will give a general outline of the history of the church and present new information — along with new questions — about the last years of the building.

Mr. Capuano's talk will begin at 2 p.m. in the Helderberg Room. There will be a Guilderland Historical Society business meeting beforehand (at 1:15 p.m.).

Tom’s presentation will include a unique twist: two hypothetical images of the church as it may have appeared on a bright summer's day some 200 years ago, created by PhotoShop Beta Generative A.I.

This event is free and open to the public. Please join us for this novel presentation.
