Board should seek a solution to bring Altamont together

To the Editor:

We note with some dismay that the Altamont Board of Trustees has not set a priority in seeking a solution to Stewart’s expansion that will bring a divided community together.

That this is the case should be clear from a failure to request or explore any alternative expansion plan; a failure to require a long-form environmental assessment review, as recommended by both the planning board and the village’s planning consultant; and a failure to articulate any substantial added benefit of the current plan for the Altamont community.

Notably, with respect to adverse impacts, the proposed expansion will have a dramatic and irreversible effect on the very character and charm that uniquely defines the village of Altamont among Capital District communities.

Stewart’s has stated unequivocally it will not leave the village regardless of the board’s decision.

It would only seem reasonable that the board should now lead in seeking a solution to resolve the issue and bring the community together.

We urge the board to deny the requested rezone and to request Stewart’s to develop an alternative plan — notably one redeveloping the existing site in one way or another.
