NEW SCOTLAND — William L. Flansburg, a carpenter and lifelong Voorheesville resident, died on Monday, Nov. 2, 2015, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Bethlehem. He was 88.

Mr. Flansburg was born on May 23, 1927, to Leroy and Gladys Flansburg in Albany, and served in the United States Navy during World War II.

He wed Sandra Nietsche Flansburg, who was 10 years his junior, on April 23, 1960.

“We were happily married for 55 years,” Mrs. Flansburg said.

“He was a carpenter,” she said. “He loved woodworking, and he did his home inside and out.”

Mr. Flansburg worked as a carpenter for the New York State Senate and the Department of Health, retiring in 1985.

He was a charter member of the Voorheesville Area Ambulance Service, and a member of the Voorheesville Fire Department. Mr. Flansburg also belonged to the American Legion in Voorheesville, and the Voorheesville Rod and Gun Club.

“He hunted for many years with his father; his brother, Rich; and his son, Billy,” Mrs. Flansburg said.

“He was an avid fisherman, going to Black Lake, and the St. Lawrence River,” she said. “He enjoyed camping with his family, and his daughter, Anne.”

Mr. and Mrs. Flansburg enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas and Atlantic City together.

“We were gamblers,” Mrs. Flansburg said. The two took many bus trips together to casinos like Foxwood, once going as far as Maryland. Mrs. Flansburg had a large win once, but Mr. Flansburg did not, she said.

“We just enjoyed going on the trips,” she said.

The couple also wintered for 10 years in Estero, Florida, she said.

“We enjoyed many friends there,” Mrs. Flansburg said.

“His dream was to refurbish an old boat,” she said. “He would work on it every day, until his illness — he couldn’t finish it.”

William L. Flansburg is survived by his wife, Sandra Nietsche Flansburg; his children, William Flansburg, of Rensselaerville, and Anne Sager, of Bethlehem; his brother, Richard Flansburg, of Voorheesville; his in-laws, Eugene and Suzanne Nietsche, of Lakeville, and Karen and Perry Finkle, of North Fort Myers, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are today, Thursday, Nov. 5, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Reilly & Son Funeral Home, 9 Voorheesville Ave., Voorheesville.
