Howard A. Brock

ALTAMONT — Howard A. Brock — a political person as well as a family man — died on Thursday, Oct. 27, 2016, in his Altamont home surrounded by those who loved him.

“He was a wonderful guy,” said his wife, Mary-Ann Brock; he was also a private person who did not want a fuss made over his death, she said.

He was born in Buffalo, New York, the son of Max and Sarah Brock. After majoring in journalism, he graduated from the University of Buffalo.

Following service in the United States Army, he made a career of public relations concentrating on politics in New York City and Albany. Mr. Brock handled public relations for Bella Abzug, a feminist leader who won a seat in Congress in 1970.

Mr. Brock retired to work occasionally as a political radio host known as “Howard the Liberal.”

“He will be missed for his integrity, intelligence, clever humor, and depth of love,” his family wrote in a tribute.

He is survived by his wife, Mary-Ann (née Ryan) Brock; his son L.J. Brock and his wife, Jennifer; and his granddaughter, Savannah Brock of Chicago, Ill.  He is also survived by his three nephews, Gary Chirlin and his wife Kristy; Paul Chirlin and his wife, Nancy; and Bob Chirlin and his wife, Patti — and their extended families.

Also mourning him is his yellow tiger cat, Ozzie. “When he died, Ozzie slept under his bed,” said Mrs. Brock. Her husband loved animals, she said, and memorial contributions may be made to any animal organization.

Funeral arrangements are by the Fredendall Funeral Home of Altamont. Mourners may leave condolences online at www.fredendallfuneralhome.com.
