NEW SCOTLAND — The Voorheesville Central School District announced on Oct. 16 that it had been the victim of a “cyber-fraud incident resulting in the unauthorized transfer of approximately $1,000,000 from the district’s Capital Construction Fund.”

The statement from the school district said it was made aware of the incident on Oct. 8, and that it is “working closely with the New York State Police, with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Secret Service, as well as with the district’s insurance carrier.”

About three-quarters of the stolen $1 million has already been recovered. The district said that efforts will “continue to recover the remaining amount.” If full recovery is not possible, Voorheesville said it “will seek reimbursement through its existing cyber insurance coverage to mitigate any financial impact.”

Voorheesville Superintendent Frank Macri declined comment. New York State Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Due to the federal shutdown, inquiries to the FBI are not monitored on a regular basis.

The district’s statement said, “The district is also conducting a thorough review of its internal procedures and protocols to further strengthen safeguards against the increasingly sophisticated threats posed by cybercrime.”
