Remembering 9/11 together was heartening

To the Editor:

On behalf of the organizing committee, I would like to take a moment and thank everyone who came out earlier this month to recognize the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorists’ attacks. It was heartening to see so many people line Main Street and remember that day, together, as a community.

Thank you, too, to all the individuals and organizations that participated in this special day. Both Senator Michelle Hinchey and Pastor Matthew van Maastricht gave such moving remarks.

We appreciate the contributions of: Robert Barnes, our bagpiper; Christina Fronk, for refreshments; Altamont Country Values, for the mums; Tim O’Hara, for the sound system; Chief Tubbs, for cleaning the memorial stone; and the police departments of Guilderland and Altamont, for traffic control.

Lastly, what makes the ceremony so special every year is the presence of our local first responders. We thank the fire departments of Altamont, Fort Hunter, Guilderland, Guilderland Center, Knox, and Westmere, as well as the emergency medical providers from the Altamont Rescue Squad and the town of Guilderland.

Thank you again for everyone who helped plan the ceremony, participated in the event, or attended to show their respects — it truly means so much. We also hope you will join us next year on Sunday, Sept. 11, as we continue to “never forget.”
