ALTAMONT — A one-vehicle crash on Bozenkill Road in Altamont on Monday morning claimed the life of Lawrence T.  Staubach. He was 22.

Staubach, a 2013 graduate of Guilderland High School, was driving east on Bozenkill Road when his Honda Suburban went off the roadway into the trees, according to Deputy Chief Curtis Cox of the Guilderland Police.

Cox said on Wednesday that the investigation into the accident was ongoing, and that he did not know anything more about what caused the crash.

The call about the accident came in at 11:18 a.m., Cox said, and was made by a passerby. The passerby did not see the crash occur, he said.

On the scene after the accident, Altamont Fire Chief Paul Miller said he had not seen any skid marks to indicate braking, Miller said, “but then with the anti-lock brakes nowadays, you don’t see any.” Road conditions were clear. Staubach was alone in the car, Miller said.

Staubach had joined the United States Army immediately after his high-school graduation, his mother, Carly Hillmann of Altamont, said. “He loved the military,” she said. “It was all he ever wanted to do.” (See related obituary.)

He was stationed in South Korea, where he was chosen for the Honor Guard, his mother said.
