NEW SCOTLAND — Spending almost a decade in the clerk’s office, Democrat has seen a number of changes and is seeking another two-year term.

Her favorite part of the job is the variety it has, she said, naming the day-to-day tasks of issuing hunting, marriage, and dog licenses as well as collecting taxes.

In 2005, she suggested that the town combine the tax collector’s duties into the clerk’s responsibilities to save money on salaries and benefits.  It’s been working smoothly since then, she said.

Deschenes has also worked on managing the town’s records, helping to bring in grants worth $90,000 to organize and computerize files, she said.

Last year, she received a registered municipal clerk certification, Deschenes said, and she is most proud of her record management, the success of her department in collecting taxes, and the things she has learned.

The town’s website has burgeoned during her time in office and it is the clerk’s duty to maintain it.

“I think we’ve come a long way,” she said.
