Kitchen fire closes farm store at Indian Ladder but the venue is otherwise open

Apple-picking — and eating — continue apace this fall as in autumns’ past, above, despite a kitchen fire on Sept. 14.

NEW SCOTLAND — No one was hurt in a kitchen fire Saturday night at Indian Ladder Farms but donut production has been temporarily halted and the farm store is closed while smoke damage is fixed.

The farm, which has been in the Ten Eyck family for more than a century, is a mecca for apple-picking in the autumn as city and suburban dwellers journey to the foot of the Helderbergs to get a taste of the country.

The fire suppression system activated as designed, extinguishing the fire before significant damage could occur, said a press release from the farm, noting there is no visible damage to the outside of the historic building, but the kitchen is currently inoperable.

“Our Apple Room, Apple Barn, Pizza Garden, Biergarten & Tasting Room, as well as pick-your-own services, remain open with normal hours of operation,” said the release.

“While we are disappointed by the interruption to our kitchen services, we are grateful that the damage was limited and didn’t cause damage to our historic buildings, but most importantly, that no one was harmed,” said Laura Ten Eyck, manager at Indian Ladder Farms, in the release.

“We’re working hard to get everything back up and running as soon as possible,” she went on. “We appreciate your understanding during this time and look forward to welcoming you back to the Farm Store soon. We appreciate the support and patience of our community during this time.”
