Head to the hills for beauty and fun

Fruits of the season: Cabbage and squash and pumpkins are on display at Newcomb’s farm during last year’s “Discover the Hilltowns” tour.

This Saturday and Sunday, the Helderberg Hilltowns Association is sponsoring its seventh annual “Discover the Hilltowns” self-guided driving tour of local farms, artisan studios, and other points of interest in Berne, Knox, Westerlo, and Rensselaerville. There will be attractions for everyone:

— Chicks, llamas, alpacas, sheep, goats, pigs, cattle, oxen, horses, and yaks to visit;

— Lawn games, face-painting, an obstacle course, and treasure hunts;

— Demonstrations of border collie-herding, coal stoves, log-sawing, chair-caning, fleece-spinning, and other fiber arts, as well as drawing, painting, and fencing;

— Tours of a restored one-room schoolhouse, a grist mill, farm pastures, and woodland trails; and

— Shopping for fresh vegetables, flowers, pumpkins, eggs, and grass-fed meats; and handmade musical instruments, furniture, knitted items, pies, soaps, jewelry, art, and other fine local and imported treasures and more.

Take a rest and buy lunch for a picnic at one of our waterfalls, enjoy a pig roast with live music, or sit down for a nice dinner at one of our fine restaurants. Enjoy local craft beverages or a cocktail reception and gallery opening.

Head for the hills and explore the many offerings of this beautiful area! Free maps are available at local libraries and other destinations, or print your own at www.hilltowns.org.
