VILLAGE TO BUY FARM

A Sewage Disposal Plant Will Be Built In the Ravine Below Cold Spring — Vote To Be Taken Soon.

Since the State Board of Health, through the attorney general, ordered the trustees of the village of Altamont to proceed to the work of creating a power system to abate the maintenance of sewage now flowing into the drains and streams passing along the principal streets of the village, the board has been looking about for some place to erect a disposal plant. They finally decided on purchasing the old Knower farm, east of the village. We understand arrangements have been made for its purchase and in due time the property owners of Altamont will be called upon to decide this very important question of sewerage.

A vote will be taken and if carried favorably, the village board will proceed to make purchases, procure plans and specifications and finally begin the actual work on the system. Of course, if the people of Altamont see fit to vote unfavorably on this question and should defeat the proposition, then the State Board of Health will take the matter in hand and force it through, regardless of our wishes.

Do we, as taxpayers of this municipality, want the state authorities to force us to build the system, or shall we on our own initiative proceed after our own plans (approved by the State Board of Health), procure land, build the disposal plant and lay lines as far as the money will allow? The entire system need not be put in operation the first year, nor need we overburden ourselves by an enormous bonded indebtedness at the start.

The location of the proposed disposal plant is an ideal one and the plant can be erected at a cost much less than at any other point. The engineer connected with the state department has already approved the plan and the site of the proposed plant.

STATE ROAD SOUTH BERNE.

George Stewart, an old resident of this vicinity, passed away at his home here, aged 98 years. He had been in failing health for some time, and recently his mind became affected. Death came as a relief from his sufferings. The funeral was held from his late home Friday at 2 o’clock. Rev. Vickery of Westerlo conducted the services. Those surviving are two sons, James of Ravena and John of this place. The latter has cared for his father in his declining years. Two brothers, Sylvester and Eli Stewart, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

VILLAGE NOTES.

— The Altamont band will give an open-air concert in the village park this Friday evening. Frequent rehearsals have been held during the past year and the members are taking more than usual interest in the meetings. The band will play at Voorheesville on Labor day.

SCHOOLS TO OPEN SEPTEMBER 4

The Altamont High school will open on Tuesday, Sept. 4, for the fall term, with the same competent teaching force as last year, with the exception of Prof. W. L. Fancher, who has been unexpectedly called to the colors.

It is hoped that all pupils will be present on Tuesday to commence with the year’s work and receive every possible benefit. While the train service for reaching Altamont is not as good as that of previous years, owing to war measures, there are several families in the village in which board can be had at a reasonable price, should it be necessary for pupils to remain during the week.

FOR SALE.

— Seven passenger Studebaker. Electric lights and starter. Price $275. Address George Buck, Altamont.
