Stories from the porch glider live on

To the Editor:

On July 27, I was honored at the Village of Altamont Museum concerning my auto racing collection — racing at our fairgrounds speedway.

Many friends, family, and business associates showed up, including my brother, Richard, who came from Baltimore.

Years ago, when I was a youth, my parents boarded racecar drivers — including Tommy Hunershets — upstairs at 107 Helderberg Ave. Ella and Luis Crounse boarded Bob Sall and Frank Bailey.

Boy, could those boys spin some stories about racing. The stories were told on a glider, which sat on the front porch.

I don’t even remember missing an auto race at the fairgrounds unless it rained or when I was in the Army Air Forces in World War II.

Special thanks to Marijo Dougherty, the curator!
