There could be a more sensible sign

To the Editor:
Has anyone else in Albany County noticed the state Department of Transportation roadside mowing operation? (A good idea.)

It’s a tractor mower followed by a truck with an impact attenuator behind (a great idea) to protect the mower operator.

However, the truck has a “Do Not Pass” sign on the rear so, theoretically, if you come upon this operation and are a good law-abiding citizen, you could (should) follow at 1 mile per hour for the 8- to 10-hour shift!

Seems to me there could be a more sensible sign such as, “Shoulder Closed, “ “Pass with Care,” or “Lane Closed.”

My numerous calls to DOT have been unanswered.

Editor’s note: New York State Department of Transportation spokesman Bryan Viggiani told The Enterprise this week that, although he could not provide more specific information before publication, an Albany County resident did speak with a DOT official about the same issue brought up by the letter writer. “I do not know what the sum and substance of that conversation was like, but I know someone did talk to someone about this. I don’t know if it was the same letter-writer or not.”

Viggiani said he would get back to The Enterprise with more information about the signage.
