Being a school board member is a tough, time-consuming position

To the Editor:
How it saddened me to read about the belligerent behavior of some citizens directed towards our local school district’s elected school board members [“Board under fire as mask rule draws ire,” and “Voorheesville OKs pre-K program,” The Altamont Enterprise, Aug. 12, 2021].

I wonder how many of these “know it all” parents volunteer as a room parent, or Scout leader, or baseball coach. Being a school board member is a tough, time-consuming position, and it’s these people who care enough about their community and children to run for these thankless positions.

Civility and respectful discussions seem to be a thing of the past. These same parents will be the first ones blaming the school board when their child gets very ill from this virus. We need to get back to discussing and compromising, and stop accusing or nothing will get accomplished.
