Grangers are selling baked goods and crafts at the Altamont Fair

To the Editor:

If you are looking for things to do this summer, don’t forget the Altamont Fair, which started on Tuesday and runs through Sunday. The fair, located in Altamont, is easily accessible from Route 20 or Route 85. With so many things to do, make sure to visit the Grange Building, on First Street, near Gate 1.

You’ll find something different being baked daily, by our Grangers. You can sit down and enjoy your baked goodies with a glass of milk, coffee, or tea.

On Saturday, there will be strawberry shortcake; on Thursday, there will be cinnamon buns; on Friday, there will be assorted pies, by the slice or whole; and on Sunday, there will be cookies.

You'll also find lots of crafts made by our Grangers, such as unique individually handcrafted aprons, our famous handcrafted scrubbies, or our famous handcrafted towels to hang on your stove or refrigerator, and much more too numerous to name.

Each booth is individually designed and set up by each Grange in Albany and Schenectady counties.  Come early each day, as there’s also other baked goods for sale, as long as they last.

Looking to downsize your possessions, moving, or doing pre-fall cleaning? Think of donating your usable items that are in good condition to the Bethlehem Grange garage sale, which will be held on two consecutive weekends — Sept. 7 and 8 and Sept. 14 and 15. All proceeds go toward the maintenance of our historic building and our community service projects.

We are looking for vinyl records, wood furniture, tools, toys, bikes, craft items, yarn, fabric, housewares, collectibles, holiday items, linens, jewelry, dishes, glassware, pots and pans in good condition, books, games, puzzles (with all of the pieces), clothing in good wearable condition for both genders and all sizes, blankets, afghans, quilts, and so much more.

We will begin taking donations after Tuesday, Aug. 21. To arrange delivery, call me, Carol Carpenter, at 518-421-1384 or 518-438-8862; or call Caroline Wirth at 518-424-4953; or call Vernon Starr at 518-567-4294.

Pick-ups may be available on a very limited basis. Please do not just drop off items. Many donations have been ruined in the past, due to sitting out in the rain and elements.

You’ll also be able to support the Bethlehem Grange by purchasing, for $5, your 25-percent-off on Oct. 16 all-day shopping pass for the Boscov’s Friends Helping Friends. Every $5 goes directly to the Bethlehem Grange.

You can also win 150 gallons of Home Heating Oil, donated by George W. Frueh Sons. Each ticket is $10, or you may buy three for $25. The recipient of the oil will be announced at our turkey dinner on Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Bethlehem Grange at 24 Bridge St.

You may also purchase the Boscov’s Friends Helping Friends 25-percent-off shopping passes, and the oil raffle tickets by calling me at 518-421-1384 or Vernon Starr at 518-567-4294.
