Shirley J. Wright

VOORHEESVILLE — Shirley J. Wright, who was dedicated to her family, also worked as a Guilderland High School hall monitor and, early in her career, helped set up inspection stations for the state police.

She died peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2023, at her Voorheesville home after a long illness. She was 88.

She was born on Sept. 18, 1934, in Schenectady to the late Lester and Hattie Oliver Empie. Her brother, Randall Empie, died before her.

“Shirley had a fulfilling career that spanned several years,” her family wrote in a tribute. “She worked for the New York State Police from 1954 to 1962, where she played a vital role in setting up state inspection stations. Later, she joined Guilderland High School as a hall monitor, dedicating her time and efforts from 1979 to 2000.

“Outside of her professional life, Shirley had many passions and hobbies. She found joy in being an active member of her church’s Ladies Group, where she enjoyed helping with dinners and spending time with fellow members. She also cherished her time with the Hilltown Seniors, where she formed lasting friendships.

“Shirley’s family was incredibly important to her. She will be remembered for her dedication to her family, her commitment to her community, and her unwavering faith. She will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.”
