Sip tea while hearing tales of Depression-era Merrymen’s Tea House

To the Editor:

In a Duncan Hines book entitled “Adventures in Good Eating,” sixth edition, Knox was described thus:  “This country abounds in historical and geological interest. Excellent food, featuring home grown fruits and vegetables, makes this place one to be remembered.”

The “place to be remembered” was Merrymen’s Tea House, a woman-owned business in Knox from 1927 to 1941.  The Knox Historical Society will be remembering this place on Saturday, Aug. 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. by hosting a “tea” at our Saddlemire Homestead Museum at 2190 Berne-Altamont Road (Route 156), in Knox.

Don and Gil Warrin, nephews of the proprietor, Lesley Brower, will be our special guests.  They will regale us with tales and stories of the Tea House while we sip tea and munch on cookies made from recipes of the 1930s.  We hope you can join us for this special occasion!
