Dogs have their day in Knox

At work: A border collie tends to its flock. Saturday's celebration in Knox of all things canine will feature a herding demonstration.

KNOX — A Dog Day Celebration will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 22, rain or shine, at the Knox Town Park, behind the town hall, on the Berne-Altamont Road.

There will be contests and games with great prizes, including doggie costume, best rick, cutest dog, best-behaved dog, and a game of musical chairs with dogs, and information on first aid for dogs and what to do if your dog is lost.

Knox town dogs can get free rabies shots, and pick up their town dog tags if they don’t have them already.Dogs from other towns are very welcome, rabies shots will be available for $8. Call ahead to ensure there will be enough vaccines; the vaccines will be given on first-come, first-served basis.

The schedule, subject to modification as necessary (see knoxny.org for any changes) follows:

— 10 a.m. vaccinations start; Micro-chipping will be available too;

— 10:15 a.m. herding demonstration with sheep and border collies;

— 10:30 a.m. contests start for costume and cutest dog;

— 10:45 a.m. talk on doggie first aid, followed by talk on therapy dogs;

— 11:15 a.m. vaccinations resume;

— 11:30 a.m. repeat of herding demonstration;

— 11:45 a.m. more contests for best behaved and best trick;

— 12:15 p.m. game of musical chairs;

— 12:30 p.m. repeat talk on doggie first aid;

— 12:45 p.m. story-telling: About Dogs. Absolute three-minute limit, original tru story, hopefully from speaker’s own experience. Great prizes! (Please register by 12:15 p.m. so we can draw for speaking order.)

At the end of story-telling, prizes will be given and there will be a drawing from tag numbers of Knox dogs for the grand prize.
