Reservoir buffer protects our drinking water
To the Editor:
I am writing to state my objection to any approval of the application by Michael Floccuzio, owner of the parcel at 4478 Western Turnpike, that allows for construction within the 500-foot buffer zone [of the Watervliet Reservoir].
The owner purchased said property knowing the aforementioned limitations. This buffer protects our drinking water, and any construction, especially those of outbuildings, has the chance of leaching chemicals stored therein into the reservoir.
The proposal, calling for three homes on the site, also requires three separate septic systems. These are dangerously close to the reservoir, and could potentially cause an outbreak of E. coli if an accidental leak occurred.
Further, there is no mention of preservation of the historical Sharp Family Cemetery on the property. The proposed 10-foot setback for access is inadequate. Asking people to park along the edge of Western Avenue is asking for an accident to occur.
Any development of the property should contain a designated parking area and a clear, accessible trail compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act to the cemetery for visitors along with a long-term maintenance plan for its upkeep.
