Celebrating the dedication of the Samuel Dickson historical marker are New Scotland Town Council members William Hennessy and Daniel Leinung, New York State Assemblywoman Patricia A. Fahy, New Scotland Historical Association President Alan Kowlowitz, Town Supervisor Douglas LaGrange, Historic Sites Chairman Chris Albright with grandson Aidan Albright, and NSHA Trustee Vince Perry.
To the Editor:
On July 10, 2024, a new historical marker honoring Samuel Dickson was unveiled outside the New Scotland Town Hall.
Dickson was born in the hamlet of New Scotland in 1807 and served his community as a physician. He was elected to Congress in 1855 and opposed the expansion of slavery.
He is buried in the nearby cemetery of the New Scotland Presbyterian Church. A more detailed account of his life may be found in the Sept. 20, 2023, issue of The Altamont Enterprise.
The New Scotland Historical Association is grateful to the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, which financed this marker, for its commitment to the preservation of community history through awarding grants for historical markers and plaques, and to Chris Albright, Historic Sites chairman, who wrote and submitted the grant to the foundation.
