Destroyer named for John Finn, a Home Front Cafe regular

To the Editor:

Do you remember “A Salute to our Heroes” on May 31, 2009 when Altamont hosted three World War II Medal of Honor recipients? Our heroes were John Finn (who was celebrating his 100th birthday), Francis Curry, and Nicholas Oreska.

John Finn passed away at 101 in 2010. Nicholas Oreska passed two years ago. Francis Curry is still with us and is one of five remaining recipients from World War II. We speak with him often and he and his family visit the Home Front Cafe when they can. We are always honored and happy to see him.

Now current news: On July 15, the USS John Finn (DDG113) will be commissioned at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. John Finn was the first man to receive the Medal of Honor in World War II and was a frequent visitor at the Home Front Cale and many of you will remember him.

How exciting that Altamont has been a part of that history!

Thanks to all
