APD warns of red-light ticket scam

The Albany Police Department is warning motorists of a scam in which emails are being sent informing people they have received a red-light camera ticket. In the emails, the scammers identifies themselves as the city of Albany.

The scammer informs the person that they have footage of them on a traffic camera going through a red light in and that a traffic citation was issued, according to a release from the police deparatment.

The scammer goes on to tell the person that, if they don't pay the fine online within 14 days, they’ll have their license revoked. There are also several links within the email.

The city of Albany does not email red-light camera violations to those who pass a red light at one of Albany’s red-light camera intersections. All violations are sent through the United States mail to the registered owner’s address by the city of Albany in cooperation with Gatso.

The release warns: If you receive one of these emails, do not click on any of the links.

If you have any questions about red-light camera tickets, please call 518-434-5006.
