Basil Adams Boyea

NEW SCOTLAND — Basil Adams Boyea, 87, died unexpectedly on Monday, May 25, 2020, along with his beloved wife, Karen Wengert Boyea, 75.

Mr. Boyea was born on Dec. 4, 1932 at the “home farm” on the Barrows Road in Stowe, Vermont to Roy A. Boyea and Phyllis Adams Boyea. He was a 1952 graduate of Stowe High School.

He married his high-school sweetheart, Arlene Moodie, in August 1952. They were divorced in 1970. He married Karen Wengert in July 1973.

“Basil enjoyed hunting (garnering many trophy specimens in his lifetime), fishing, snowmobiling, skiing, tennis, school sports (especially basketball at which he excelled along with the 1952 Stowe High School Class C state championship winning team),” his family wrote in a tribute.

He was a carpenter most of his life. In his youth, he served as temporary caretaker at The Trout Club in Stowe when his grandfather fell ill and could not continue. He also drove a school bus for two years after his uncle, Nason Adams, was drafted.

Farming was a major part of his life as well, having worked with and for his grandfather, Seldon Adams, and family, and at a Waitsfield, Vermont farm after graduation and marriage to Arlene. He was a long-time member of the New Scotland Beagle Club and was honored to have a field trial titled and run in his honor.

Basil Adams Boyea is survived by his daughter, Cathy (née Boyea) Burgess and husband, Gary, of Shaftsbury, Vermont; by his former daughter-in-law, Linda Cochran Boyea Anthony, of Morrisville, Vermont; by his daughter-in-law, Ann Barton Boyea of Waterbury, Vermont; by his stepbrother, Arthur Bond of Vermont; and by his half-brother, David Boyea, and his wife, Nancy, of Connecticut.

He also leaves a niece, Phyllis Scribner, and family as well as a nephew, Gary Scribner, and family.

In addition, he leaves his grandchildren, Neill Burgess and his wife, Cheri, of Fairfax, Vermont; Caryn Burgess of San Diego, California; Christopher Boyea and his wife, Lisa, of Morrisville, Vermont; Amber Boyea Sipes and her husband, Christopher, of Statesville, North Carolina; Chad Boyea and his wife, Stephanie, of Decatur, Georgia; and Will Boyea and wife, Sophie, of Hinesburg, Vermont.

His great-grandchildren include Avery Boyea; Brody Boyea; Kerrigan, Parker, and Lincoln Sipes; Lydia and Hattie Boyea; and Andrew Burgess.

His parents, Roy A. Boyea and Phyllis Adams Boyea, died before him, as did his sister, Joan Boyea Scribner Lemieux; his son, Alan Boyea; and his granddaughter, Vicki Boyea, as well as his nephew, Steve Scribner.

A memorial service for Basil and Karen Boyea will take place at a future date.

“The family would like to express sincere appreciation to all of Basil and Karen’s doctors and other professionals as well as to their very caring neighbors in New York and Florida,” the tribute said. “Family was integral in assisting them to return home to New York during a very difficult time and in helping them at home.”
