Vote out the incumbents

To the Editor:

It has recently come to my attention that Mat Harris is currently the deputy clerk for the town of Berne. When did he get this position?

He had resigned from his position on the Berne Town Board about four months ago, citing professional and personal obligations. He stated that these obligations took away from his ability to act as town councilperson.

That being said, how will he be able to fulfill the obligations of the deputy clerk position?

As a councilperson, Harris was making $3,635. The deputy clerk position pays $15,912. That is an increase of over four times the amount of pay. It seems the personal and professional obligations are superseded by the financial gain of his new position as deputy clerk.

The previous deputy clerk, Jean Guarino, was fired by Anita Clayton, allegedly due to Guarino being endorsed by town Democrats to run for Berne town clerk in November. (See Enterprise article dated April 15, 2021.)

Here again, we see cronyism at play within the town of Berne elected officials.

Please remember when voting in November and vote out the incumbents. Your vote matters.

Editor’s note: Frank Brady, a Democrat, ran for Berne Town Board on the GOP line in 2017 and on the Democratic line in 2019; he was not elected.
