Equity is different from equality

To the Editor:
Ted Gup’s letter of May 19 about the Guilderland School Board election is an amazing, timely, and eloquent explanation of how to handle many conflicts that are going on globally and locally [“The election is over: Now it’s time for the victors to practice true inclusion”].

To follow his suggestions, it may be helpful for us all to take a look at the definitions of diversity,  equity, and inclusion on the school district’s website at https://www.guilderlandschools.org/equity-diversity-and-inclusion-at-guilderland/.

We should all be examples of these actions for our children and each other, especially the one on equity (emphasis added):

Equity — Be fair.

Equity is different from equality. Equality is giving everyone the same things. Equity is being fair to each and every person by considering their specific needs and making sure each individual has what they need to achieve their own goals.

This includes providing access, opportunity and advancement for all by striving to identify and eliminate barriers that prevent the full participation of individuals from all groups.
