Old friends appreciated

Balancing on the bed of a pickup truck, Timothy Ivan Martin waters flowers on Monday as the temperature climbs towards 90 degrees. For decades, John Sands has donated hanging flower baskets to grace utility poles in Altamont; in the winter, he donates pine sprays. “He’s been doing this for 27 years,” said Sands, from the driver’s seat, of Martin’s watering acrobatics.

A loud shout-out to my old friends, John Sands and Ivan Martin, for keeping the streets of our village beautiful.
