A MUCH NEEDED

PUBLIC IMPROVEMENT

Upon the request of the Water Board, the Board of Trustees of Altamont have called a special election to be held Monday, May 29th, at the village rooms in Makely’s hall, for the purpose of deciding if the village will install a filtration plant. All users of our village water know from experience that our water has been in a very unsatisfactory condition in the past on account of the sediment and discoloration from vegetable growth.

The Board of Water Commissioners have gone thoroughly into the matter from an engineering, financial and feasible standpoint before making the recommendations, and it is their judgment that the proposition will prove satisfactory in every way, shape and manner.

The plans of the Board are to properly install a battery of mechanical filters, erecting a necessary building for housing them, and concreting the storage reservoir. It is also proposed that if possible this work will be started as quickly as possible if the proposition is carried. It is hoped that it will be, as the expense, in proportion to the benefits to be derived, is so small that the village officers can see no cause for any justifiable opposition.

DELANSON

We understand some of our lovers of the “rod and reel” spent the weekend in an endeavor to hook a few large ones from the deep. Just how well they succeeded hasn’t been told.

THOMPSON’S LAKE

The tent caterpillar has made its appearance in this vicinity again after several years’ absence. It was hoped that it had disappeared for good.

NEW YORK STATE
DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH

Diphtheria Can Be Wiped Out

Over 27,000 people in New York state took the disease during 1921 and 1700 died from it, most of them children under five years of age. Every one of these cases and deaths could have been prevented. How? By the use of toxin-antitoxin. This mixture is different from antitoxin used to cure diphtheria, which only protects the child for about three weeks. Toxin-antitoxin protects for years and probably for life. Toxin-antitoxin protection is obtained by the injection of a small amount of sterile serum into the arm once a week for three weeks. This makes the child as safe from diphtheria as vaccination does from small-pox. If every child between six months and five years of age could have this treatment, diphtheria could be eventually wiped out. Is this not worthwhile? If you want further information about this method of protection, talk it over with your family physician.

RADIO ENTERTAINMENT
On the evening of Decoration Day, St. Mark’s Lutheran church of Guilderland Center will hold one of their famous hot chicken suppers at 4:30 p.m., standard time and 5:30 new time. Home-made ice cream and candies will be for sale. The price of the supper is, adults, 75 cents; children under 12 years of age, 50 cents. A free radio entertainment will be given to all who are in attendance at the supper. This is the first entertainment of this kind the church has ever given and the first of the kind that most people have ever had the privilege of listening to. What a wonderful day in which we are living, when our friends can sing for us or talk to us hundreds and thousands of miles away. Do not fail to enjoy these privileges.
