“Convoy for Heroes” to honor fallen veterans and current first responders and health-care workers

Because so many Memorial Day parades were cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Hudson Mohawk Chapter of NY-Penn Military Vehicle Collectors Club has arranged for a “Convoy for Heroes” to take place on Monday, May 25.

“The convoy is in solemn recognition of our fallen veterans that we salute every Memorial Day and in addition, this year recognition will also be given to our first responders and healthcare workers,” the club said in a notice announcing the convoy.

The convoy will consist of a variety of historic military vehicles with an escort provided by the Schoharie County Sheriff’s office. The convoy will be making a route through several villages with special salutes provided at the locations below.  The approximate timing of the visits are:

— Gallupville firehouse at 8 a.m.;

— Central Bridge firehouse at 8:30 a.m.;

— Cobleskill Bassett Hospital and firehouse at 9 a.m.;

— Middleburg Village 10 a.m.;

— Schoharie Scho-Wright (50th Anniversary!), Fire Department, and Old Stone Fort Cemetery at 10:30 a.m.;

— Berne Fire firehouse at 11:30 a.m.;

— Knox Fire firehouse at noon;

— Altamont Ambulance and Fire Department at 12:30 p.m.;

“It is important that we remember our citizen soldiers whether they were on the front lines in Belgium in World War II or in the emergency rooms today, that through their efforts, we persevered,” the notice says. “While we can’t offer the normal floats and bands, we can in our own way salute the fallen and those that are helping us today.”

In wanting to keep the event safe for all it is requested that observers wear masks and maintain six feet of distance or stay in their vehicles.
