From Altamont to Washington, Scouts in Troop 264 pose in front of the Capitol.

To the Editor:

Altamont’s Boy Scout Troop 264 would like to thank the community for its support of our recent trip to Washington, D.C. The Scouts worked very hard to fundraise and prepare for this trip and it paid off very well.

While staying in Greenbelt Campground, Maryland, the Scouts, leaders, and families enjoyed a fantastic experience with countless learning opportunities. On just our first day, we visited the Smithsonian Castle and the Air and Space Museum, toured the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and saw many memorials and monuments dedicated to Jefferson, Franklin Roosevelt, Martin Luther King, Korean War, Vietnam War, Lincoln, Washington, and World War II.

On our second day in the city, we had the chance to tour the Capitol Building, Library of Congress, American Indian Museum, National Botanic Garden, American History Museum, the Boy Scouts Memorial, and we saw the White House. On our last day, we visited the Museum of Natural History, the Marines Memorial, Theodore Roosevelt Island, and Arlington National Cemetery. The troop learned a lot about our “Duty to Country” and had a great time.

Troop 264 looks forward to more camping and learning opportunities in the coming year. The troop meets biweekly to practice Scout skills and work on merit badges. We also spend a week camping at Rotary Scout Reservation each July. If any boys ages 11 to 17 are interesting in the troop, they should contact our scoutmaster, Doug Stang for more information at http://www.trcscouting.org/Troop-1264-Altamont-NY/Leadership.
