Awards and achievements

These local students have recently distinguished themselves:

— Sam Feinman of Voorheesville, a student at the State University of New York College at Oneonta, presented a project titled “The Effect of Green Policies on the U.S. Stock Market” at the annual Student Research and Creative Activity Day event;

— Caleigh-Shea Murphy of Altamont, a student at the State University of New York College at Oneonta, presented a project titled “Assessing Zinc Exposure Necessary for Cytotoxic Effects on Cancer Cell Lines” at the annual Student Research and Creative Activity Day event;

— Justin Heller of Altamont, a junior studying professional accounting at the State University of New York College at Oneonta, was one of 23 students from the School of Economics and Business who were inducted into the college’s Beta Gamma Sigma honor society chapter, ranking in the top 10 percent of the baccalaureate program;

— Matthew Cunningham of Schenectady, majoring in construction technology at Hudson Valley Community College, was inducted into the Tau Alpha Pi academic honor society for engineering technology;

— Zachary Webster of Altamont, majoring in mechanical engineering technology at Hudson Valley Community College, was inducted into the Tau Alpha Pi academic honor society for engineering technology; and

— Matthew Schiller of Slingerlands was recognized with the Male Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award at Colby-Sawyer College in New Hampshire. The award is given to the graduating male senior who, in the opinion of the Athletic Advisory Council, has made significant contributions to both the scholastic and varsity programs of the college.

Schiller is a biology major with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.63. He is vice president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and treasurer of his class. He was selected to the North Atlantic Conference All-Academic Team in his sophomore and junior years and will be a GNAC All-Academic selection this year.

On the soccer field, Schiller started 50 out of the 59 games he played in. He was a mainstay in the backline for four years and helped the team to 14 shutouts during his career. Although he did most of his work at the defensive side of the pitch, Schiller also collected six goals and four assists for his career. He was selected by his peers as a team captain the past two seasons.
