Local veterans honor Memorial Day during May

To the Editor:

The month of May is a busy month for the members of Boyd Hilton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7062, our auxiliary, and our color guard.

On Saturday, May 11, at 1 p.m., our auxiliary will present its annual Loyalty Day program. Join us at our post on Mill Street in Altamont as we honor the community members and veterans who show their loyalty to country and freedom.

We also award scholarships to the winners of the annual essay contest for local elementary students. Come hear them read their essays titled “What Loyalty Day Means To Me.”

Refreshments will follow the presentation.

On Sunday, May 19, at 1 p.m., the members of the VFW and American Legion will honor our fallen, missing-in-action, and prisoner-of-war soldiers in Orsini Park. This year’s presentation will be the story of the “Missing Soldier Table.”  Refreshments will follow the presentation at the VFW Post in Altamont.

Our color guard will participate in Memorial Day parades in Voorheesville at 10 a.m. on May 25, in Berne at 10 a.m. on May 27, and in  Knox at 1 p.m. on May 27.

We will also be posting the colors for Loyalty Day and on May 19 in Orsini Park.

Our members will also be involved with our annual poppy-sales fundraiser. Look for us throughout the month at local convenience and grocery stores.

Also, don’t forget May kicks off horseshoe season. The Altamont Horseshoe League begins play on May 14. Play begins at 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday. Entry is $5 per week. Come sign up at the meeting on Tuesday, May 7, at 6:30 p.m. The league is a handicapped sporting event, so all levels of experience are welcome.
