‘The Story of Plastic’ provides major insight into a problem we should all be aware of

To the Editor:
After Saturday’s Earth Day activities, I hope most people know that there are environmental issues that we have to deal with all year long. Plastic, much of it for single use, contributes to pollution in many ways.

Plastic production releases both greenhouse gas and toxic air pollution. There is a horrifying amount of plastic in the oceans with more added every day either by intentional dumping or by washing downstream from where it was left. Ocean plastic kills marine wildlife in various ways, including animals that mistake it for food and die of malnutrition with their stomachs full of plastic.

The documentary movie, “The Story of Plastic,” provides major insight into the problem of plastic pollution around the world and the difficulty of dealing with it.

The League of Women Voters will be showing this movie over Zoom on Tuesday, May 9, at 6:30 p.m.  The movie will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer period with David Sayer, a representative of the advocacy group Beyond Plastics.
