Who won World War II?
To the Editor:
I just read your editorial, “An informed citizenry — the strength of a people,” in the April 18 edition and wanted to share a related experience I had.
Five or six years ago, I had lunch at a local diner. While eating, I was reading a book on World War II. I don’t remember the title exactly but I believe it was on the war in the Pacific. The cover graphic was vibrant and World War II was prominent in the title.
When I went to pay my bill, the personable young lady who took care of me saw the cover of the book on the counter. Making polite conversation, she asked me where the war was fought.
I mumbled something about it being global. She then asked if we won that war. I really was speechless but managed to say we had.
To work in this establishment, she had to be at least 21 years old. I assume she was a high school graduate. Her questions, innocent in their presentation, spoke volumes about her and her generation.
The point of your editorial was well taken.
