Hilltown Memorial Day parade canceled

To the Editor:

The expression “desperate times call for desperate measures” is believed to have originated with the ancient Greek physician, Hippocrates, who died in 370 B.C. In his work “Amorphisms,” he wrote: “For extreme diseases, extreme methods of cure, as to restriction, are most suitable.” How history repeats itself!

After much discussion, the Kiwanis Club of the Helderbergs voted on Wednesday to cancel the 2020 parade in light of the continuing threat to our community from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Other community organizations have made similar decisions. Much as we treasure and celebrate those who have served our country, we cannot risk the health of the members of our community at this time.

We have been exploring the idea of doing something at a later, safer date, but there are no concrete plans now, nor can there be any until we see how this pandemic runs its course.

I think this period will be for this generation what World War II was to the Greatest Generation, the Kennedy assassination to the Baby Boomers, and 9/11 to the Millennials — a common touchstone where everyone will have common memories to share.

We’ll get through it, of course, and emerge stronger. Different but stronger.

So, this Memorial Day, we thank you for your past support. Please stay safe, help and treasure each other, and we’ll be in touch for 2021.
