To welcome transgender students. Bathrooms at GHS are for one person at a time
To the Editor:
I read Jacqueline Hallock’s letter expressing fear and concern for daughters and granddaughters in a society with bathroom rights for transgender people [“Enterprise no longer a traditional-values newspaper,” March 23, 2017]. I have daughters and granddaughters of my own, and I would like to ease some of her fears.
First, the bathrooms that Guilderland High School installed to welcome transgender students accommodate only one person at a time. Such bathrooms are found at many small restaurants and stores lacking the traffic to require two rest rooms. I am sure Ms. Hallock has used such bathrooms and appreciated the privacy they provide.
As for ladies’ rooms with multiple stalls, I have used such rest rooms for over 50 years and never seen a woman less than fully dressed. All disrobing is confined to the stalls, out of public view. I cannot imagine any man going to the trouble of dressing as a woman for the thrill of watching women wash their hands and comb their hair.
It’s true that, without armed guards at restroom doors, any man could enter a ladies’ room to attack a woman, but that possibility has always existed and has nothing to do with transgender rights.
