Eleanor Patnode

ALTAMONT — Eleanor (née Morell) Patnode, described by her family as a devoted mother and homemaker, died on Tuesday, March 17, 2015, at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center in Guilderland following an extended illness. She was 93.

She was born on Nov. 30, 1921 in Manchester, New Hampshire. The daughter of the late Henry Morell and Francis Malinowski, she grew up in foster homes in Boston and graduated from Canton High School in Canton, Massachusetts.

In 1944, she married Richard L. Patnode, of Isle La Motte, Vermont, who was on active duty with the United States Army. Following his discharge, they lived in Isle La Motte until 1953, when Mr. Patnode took a job with General Electric in Schenectady. They then took up residence in Altamont, where she lived the remainder of her life. Her husband, Richard, died in 2000 and her son, Michael, died in 1982.

“She was a constant communicant of St Lucy’s Catholic Church in Altamont,” her family wrote in a tribute, “and a committed caregiver to several individuals who needed her friendship and assistance.”

She is survived by three of her children, James Patnode and his wife, Marcie, of Queensbury, New York, Diane Patnode of Altamont, and Kathleen Patnode of St. College, Pennsylvania; her grandchildren, Corey, Josh, Timmi, Chris and his wife, Kristin, Cindy, and Robyn and her husband, Jonathan; her great-grandchildren, Ethan, Benjamin, Brooke, and Makenzie; her sister, Patricia Coyne of Weymouth, Massachusetts; and her sister-in-law Madeline Patnode of Alburg, Vermont.

Calling hours will be from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 1, at Fredendall Funeral Home at 199 Main Street in Altamont. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12:45 p.m. at St. Lucy / St. Bernadette’s Church at 109 Grand Street in Altamont with interment at Fairview Cemetery in the spring. Online condolences may be made at www.fredendallfuneralhome.com.
