Time to guess when the ice will exit

To the Editor:

Time is running out to join the fun! If you’ve lived on the Hill, you probably remember the Rest Seekers Restaurant and Benny’s contest to guess the date and time that the ice would officially leave Warner Lake.

The Helderberg Kiwanis have revived that tradition this year with a 50-50 Ice-Out Challenge. Guesses are $3 each and the challenge ends at midnight on March 18.

The winner will take home 50 percent of the total pot; the rest will go to the Kiwanis fund to support Berne-Knox-Westerlo students. The device to determine ice-out is located at the north end of the lake near the Maple on the Lake.

You can make your guess at several Hilltowns establishments. Look for our Kiwanis jars at Fox Creek Market, Township Tavern, Helderberg True Value Hardware, P & L Deli, East Berne Mobil, Knox Market, Helderberg Mountain Brewing, Shell Inn, and the Maple on the Lake. Thank you for your support.

Editor’s note: Ann Hein said on Tuesday that about 150 people have entered the contest so far. She said the money will go to support students who otherwise couldn’t afford school trips or other extras.
