Eight non-fatal hunting incidents in 2021
Following are descriptions of the eight non-fatal hunting incidents recorded by the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation in 2021.
Small-game hunting:
— On Jan. 24 in Chenango County, the shooter, age 66 with 50 years of experience, was coyote hunting when he slipped on ice and discharged a round into his foot; there were no violations;
— On May 21 in Sullivan County, the shooter, age 63, was shooting at a squirrel in his front yard and discharged a round of bird shot, striking a person walking on the road. The shooter had no hunting license and had never taken a hunter-education class;
— On Oct. 28 in Erie County, an unknown shooter was pheasant hunting and discharged one round of birdshot, striking the victim, who was wearing orange, with one shot pellet; and
— On Dec. 4 in Chautauqua County, the shooter, age 20 with nine years of experience, was grouse hunting, and discharged two rounds of birdshot, hitting his hunting partner in the leg with shot.
Turkey hunting:
— On May 1 in Orange County, the shooter, age 61 with 40 years of experience, discharged one round at a turkey, striking and injuring two people in his hunting party with birdshot. The victims were not wearing orange. There were violations.
Big game hunting:
— On Nov. 7 in Saratoga County, the shooter, age 62 with 48 years of experience, discharged one round over a highway while deer hunting, striking a car and injuring two people. There were violations;
— On Nov. 20 in Otsego County, the shooter, age 55 with 41 years of experience, slipped on uneven ground while deer hunting and discharged one round, hitting another member of his hunting party. The victim was wearing orange and there were no violations; and
— On Dec. 10 in Greene County, a firearm was leaning against an ATV and started to fall. The victim reached for it and shot himself in the foot. The hunter was 69 and had 50 years of experience. There were violations.
