I have made a real difference and am seeking reelection

To the Editor:

Because helping people never gets old, I announce I am seeking re-election as county legislator in the 29th District (Carman Road-Western Avenue area of Guilderland).

Doing this job well requires a lot of homework and careful listening. In my first year, I visited every county department to learn from employees and share my aspirations with them.

The office also requires attending hundreds of meetings, asking tough questions, and holding the powerful accountable. A clear focus is needed on easing the tax burden and a willingness to reach across party lines to make things better for everyone. And a legislator should offer support and encouragement when needed.

Every incumbent should have to answer this question, “What real difference did you make?”

I voted successfully to cut the county tax rate each year in office; sponsored grants to help the Guilderland Food Pantry, town seniors, the ambulance service, Y summer camp, Babe Ruth league, and the Guilderland Chamber — delivering on my promise to get Guilderland more of its fair share of county money.

I co-authored a sweeping modernization bill with a member of the majority party; this bipartisan cooperation will make county government more “citizen friendly” and cut the use of paper dramatically.

We passed legislation to improve veterans’ benefits and supported more outreach to vets and approved a $73 million renovation of the county nursing home, to be financed by the state.

We passed a law to protect animals placed in danger and I was named Personnel Committee Chair, the first minority party member ever in that post.

I’ve also had perfect attendance for all 41 legislature meetings.

It would be a privilege to be able to build on these successes. Never hesitate to contact me with an idea or concern. Your input makes me a stronger advocate for my constituents.
