BERNE
The snow plow which was broken down at East Berne last week arrived in Berne Sunday afternoon although only half of the propellers were working. It helped the Schoonmaker boys with their bus and truck which had been snow bound above East Berne last Thursday night. Some of the passengers of the bus managed to get home Saturday by way of walking from East Berne. No automobiles in Berne either Friday or Saturday and with the assistance of a truck and a gang of men the three days’ mail reached the village late Monday evening. At this writing the snow plow is at Altamont ready for work. We hope to see the state roads open in a few days.
KNOX
The village school was closed on Thursday and Friday on account of the severe storm.
TWO CLASSES OF HIGH
SCHOOL HAVE PARTY
On Friday evening, Feb. 5th, the Freshman-Sophomore classes of the Altamont High school held a party at the home of Miss Elizabeth Keenholts, the president. The classes also entertained a few guests. Several games were played, and dancing was enjoyed by all present. The guests also played cards, and several showed themselves to be experts. Refreshments were served, after which everyone joined in dancing again, the party breaking up at a late hour. Everyone declared he had a very enjoyable time.
DAIRYMEN’S LEAGUE NOTES
Due to the severe storm and the impassable condition of the roads, our dairymen were unable to attend the meeting held at Berne on Tuesday for the purpose of awarding the milk route contract. Therefore the date was postponed to February 20th, if the weather and roads will permit. If it is not possible to meet on that date, we will try again on the 25th.
NEW $120,000 SCHOOL
PLANNED FOR SCHOHARIE
Schoharie village is turning its attention to the replacement of their high school building which was destroyed by fire last week.
The school board of District No. 1 have issued a notice for a school meeting of the qualified voters of the district to be held on March 12 at 7:30 p.m. at Firemen’s hall to vote on the question of authorizing the district to raise, by tax $55,000 and $10,000 for equipment, of a new school building to be erected on the old site.
It is believed that there is a salvage of perhaps $25,000 in the brick and foundation of the burned structure and with the $40,000 to be received from the insurance companies a building can be completed with the additional funds to be voted upon. School work has been resumed, the Chapter House of the D. A. R., the Engine house and the new county building are being used.
Official appreciation of offers of aid by the Middleburgh, Cobleskill, Altamont and Delanson schools was extended by the chairman of the Board of Education, Charles H. Dietz., who said, “Schoharie appreciates deeply the generous offers of assistance in the calamity that has befallen our school. Members of our board join with me in expressing our thanks and appreciation for these offers and the neighborly spirit that prompted them. We have already availed ourselves of these offers and with the help thus supplied and with the aid of our local citizens are carrying on our work as well as possible under the circumstances. We shall not forget the kind action of those who have helped us and hope at some time to reciprocate.”
