ALBANY COUNTY GETS SHARE OF BIG
SNOW, MAKING ROADS IMPASSABLE
Altamont and other county villages are today “digging out” of their snowbound condition caused by the latest snow storm that came Wednesday night and Thursday putting on top of a very comfortable amount of snow then on hand another eight or ten inches.
There was quite some difficulty in manipulating autos and especially the bus line to Albany for though the rotary plow opened the highway yesterday there was some drafting that caused trouble and delay.
Altamont village streets are opened and owners are cleaning walks as fast as possible. The temperature was not extremely low and the bright sunshine this morning seemed to make everybody happy.
Charleston Contest Feb.
12th At Voorheesville
What promises to be one of the most interesting features of the Ynot dances to date is the Charleston contest, which will be held at I. O. O. F. hall, Voorheesville, Friday night, Feb. 12th. This contest is open to both ladies and gentlemen, and three prizes are offered the winners. As there are a great number of Charleston dancers in this section, interest in this contest should run high. The contestants will register their names at the box office on the night of the dance. The number of contestants is not limited. In case of too great a number registering for one night, the ones registering first will be taken on that night and the others on the following Friday night, prizes being awarded on each night. Everyone registering will be given an opportunity to compete. There will be no increase in price, and the balcony will be reserved for spectators.
Farmers’ Week at the
State College, Ithaca
Beginning next Monday, February 8-13 is “Farmers’ Week” at the state college of agriculture at Ithaca. Albany county will be well represented by a good sized delegation.
Horse-pull-meter
There will be a unique contest of the tug-o’-war type this year at Farmers’ week, for the dynamometer is to be on exhibition. This machine is attracting much attention at fairs in the middle west. It is a horse pulling contest machine. It registers the weight a team can pull. Tests show that a team may exert a tractive pull equal to or more than its own weight. One team weighing 2795 pounds pulled 2900 pounds. The world’s record for pull is held by a team of Belgians which weighed 3700 pounds and pulled 3,475 pounds on the dynamometer.
OLD TIME FIDDLERS’ CONTEST
TO BE HELD FEB. 19
Last week the management of the Ynot Dance club, conducting dances at the I. O. O. F. hall, Voorheesville, stated they wanted to put on some square dances as a special attraction, and asked us to recommend some good old-time fiddler and a good square dance caller, due to the growing popularity of the old-time dances. In going over our list of eligibles, we found it wasn’t so hard to pick a good fiddler and caller; we know of several, and not wishing to show any partiality, we are going to let the public—YOU—pick the fiddler.
The Ynot Dance club is going to give $20.00 in cash to the three best fiddlers in this section.
So come on, you old-timers of 50 years of age or more; dig out the old fiddle and practice up on “Turkey in the Straw,” for that is one of the selections you must play to enter the contest. Fill out the registration blank on this page.
