CLARKSVILLE — A quick-thinking sheriff’s deputy and no small amount of luck saved Sons Deli from a fire that occurred at about 2 a.m. on Jan. 31. 

The Clarksville deli announced on social media that the unnamed deputy had been on patrol when she noticed “some light coming from the back of the building,” which turned out to be a fire in the kitchen. 

She “jumped into action immediately, breaking the back window and utilizing the fire extinguisher. Thanks to her quick thinking and response, we consider ourselves lucky that the fire was not able to spread out of the back corner of the kitchen. No structural damage, but a heck of a lot of smoke.”

Although serious damage was avoided, the deli is closed temporarily to assess the situation. 

The Albany County Sheriff’s Office could not immediately be reached for the name of the deputy who put out the fire.

Sons Deli, at 2082 Delaware Ave., was opened in February 2023 by Albany County Legislator Chris Smith, who then sold the business that October, at the location of the old Jake Moon restaurant.

“The BIGGEST thanks and gratitude has to go to our first responders, both law enforcement and our local volunteer firefighters,” the social media post read. “It has always been our pleasure to feed their crews and we are looking forward to when we can put out a spread for them to truly thank everyone for their dedicated time and quick responses. This has been a busy year for fires, especially in the hills, and these folks go ABOVE & BEYOND as volunteers in our tight knit communities.”
