Learn about the women of the Schuyler Mansion

Women of the Schuyler Mansion will be the subject of a Feb. 4 talk at the New Scotland Historical Society.

To the Editor:

The “Schuyler Sisters” have been causing quite a stir in the Broadway musical, Hamilton, and rightfully so. Born and raised in Albany, they were the daughters of Revolutionary War General and United States Senator, Philip Schuyler, and his wife, Catherine Van Rensselaer of patroon lineage. They lived in a pivotal time for our then-infant nation.

George and Martha Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Benedict Arnold, Horatio Gates, and Dolley Madison can be listed as just a few of their friends, associates, and adversaries. In the lives of this large, vigorous family one finds stories of power, romance, intrigue, tragedy, and influence.

If only the walls of the nearby Schuyler Mansion could talk! Perhaps they can.

The New Scotland Historical Association is hosting Michelle Mavigliano, Schuyler Mansion educator, who will give a timely and informative program on Sunday, Feb. 4, at 2 p.m. at the Wyman Osterhout Community Center in New Salem at Old New Salem Road.

The association museum will open 30 minutes before the start of the program. Admission is always free.
