GUILDERLAND — Walter J. Tryon Sr., an Army veteran and mechanic, cherished spending summers with his family in the Adirondacks.

He died peacefully at his Guilderland home on Friday, Jan. 2, 2026. He was 94.

Born on July 30, 1931, in Albany, he was the son of the late Ernest F. Tryon and Oliva A. Tryon.

“A lifetime resident of Albany County, he graduated from the Voorheesville Central School District in 1950,” his family wrote in a tribute. “Walter proudly served his country in the United States Army during the mid-1950s, where he was stationed in Greenland as a helicopter mechanic.

“Upon returning home, he began a long and dedicated career as an automotive mechanic, working for Don Allen Chevrolet, Marsh Hallman Chevrolet, and DePaula Chevrolet, all in Albany, until his retirement.

“In his spare time, Walter could often be found tinkering in his garage, restoring and repairing antique engines, tractors, and other equipment — something he truly enjoyed. Later in life, he remained active by working at French’s Hollow Fairways in Guilderland Center, assisting with grounds and equipment maintenance.

“Walter was a lifetime active member of the Hudson Mohawk Chapter of the Pioneer Gas Engine Association Inc., known as the “Gas Up” in Gallupville, New York. He also cherished summers spent camping, boating, and fishing with his family in the Adirondack Mountains.”
