Carbo-Porter named dean of nursing at Maria College

Laurie Carbo-Porter, Ph.D., RN, has been named dean of nursing at Maria College.

Carbo-Porter has been a registered nurse for over 30 years and a nurse educator and higher education administrator for over 20 years. Prior to joining Maria College, served in a variety of leadership roles within higher education, most recently at Excelsior College and at SUNY Empire State College.

Maria College is a private, co-educational, Catholic college founded in 1958 and sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. The College has 800 students, both full- and part-time.

During her nursing career, Carbo-Porter has worked as a college health-service director; homecare nurse; wound, ostomy, and continence consultant, community health improvement coordinator; and medical/surgical nurse.

Her areas of expertise are nursing education, competency-based education, clinical performance assessment, population health, and health assessment.

Her areas of research have focused on adults in nontraditional learning environments and assessment and measurement of clinical competence. Some of her work is published in the Journal of Continuing Education in Nursing and the Journal of Measurement in Nursing.

Carbo-Porter earned a Ph.D. in educational psychology and methodology from the University at Albany, State University of New York; a master of science in nursing degree from The Sage Colleges; a bachelor of science in nursing degree from the State University of New York College of Technology; and a diploma in nursing from Albany Medical Center School of Nursing.
