Gerald O’Malley, you are truly a community superstar!

To the Editor:

In life we take so much for granted. When we turn on the faucet, we expect water to come out and most of us never stop to think about how remarkable that is.

I, for one, am guilty of overlooking many of the truly remarkable things in my life including all the  volunteers and public servants who quietly go about making our lives easier and safer.

Just recently I went to my mailbox and knew with certainty that my town of Berne property tax bill would be there. Gerald O’Malley, our long-time tax collector, would have it no other way.

Through sickness and health Jerry always makes sure the tax bill arrives on the first business day of the New Year. In addition, he has for decades been an active member of the local fire department and the Helderberg Ambulance squad.

Need a helping hand or wondering how to get an absentee ballot, a veteran’s exemption or borrow a hospital bed or wheelchair? The answer is always the same — CALL O’MALLEY!

It is way past time to publicly express gratitude for the top-notch job Jerry does in every task he undertakes.

Thank you, Jerry, for freely sharing one of the most valuable gifts a human being can give — the gift of time. Gerald O’Malley, you are truly a community superstar! Thank you for helping to make “The Hill” such a wonderful place to live!
