James Gaughan

After many months of soul-searching and discussion with my family, I decided not to run for re-election in March as Altamont’s Mayor.

Although there has already been one Guilderland Board of Education meeting in the fall where the district asked for input on the school budget, I am unsure what was the extent of public input. I actually am not sure if anyone spoke.

I was unable to attend last week's Guilderland Board of Education's Jan.

We have been through a long, and sometimes brutal election season.  Now we have a new president-elect.  As I think on the uncertain future for our country, I feel it's most important that a good president reflects his or her people.

We enjoyed the summer evening walks along Main Street to the sound of music drifting from the library concerts or joined the gathering of families to watch movies in the park sponsored by the Altamont Fire Department.

The charm and beauty of our village doesn't go without notice.  Our village streets and public gardens are a tribute to the hard work of Department of Public Works staff and the meticulous work of garden volunteers.

The modification to the STAR [School Tax Relief] exemption program contained in the 2016-17 New York State budget will not provide additional, timely savings or relief from the onerous school tax burden that our state and executive officials say they are addressing.

James Gaughan is the mayor of the village of Altamont.

On Sunday, Oct. 18, the village held a program in Village Hall to kick off the 125th Anniversary of the founding of Altamont.
